Try to remember that I'm a Werecoyote who murdered her own family. I won't judge.
— Malia in Echo House

Malia Tate (Born Malia Hale), was introduced in Season 3 as a supporting character and was promoted to a main character in the fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons of MTV's Teen Wolf.

Malia was born to the Werewolf Peter Hale and the Werecoyote assassin Corinne, inheriting her mother's Werecoyote genes and unintentionally taking a portion of her mother's power at birth. Upon realizing Corinne's resentment toward her newborn daughter for taking her powers, Talia Hale took all memory of Malia from her father using a memory-manipulation ritual and put Malia up for adoption to protect her. Malia was adopted by Henry and Evelyn Tate, who raised her as their own alongside their daughter Kylie on a ranch in Beacon Hills.

While driving with her mother and sister, Malia was attacked by an unknown individual, causing the car to crash into the Preserve. The stress of this event paired with the full moon overhead caused Malia to shift into her coyote form for the first time. Since she had no idea of her supernatural heritage nor any control over her abilities, Malia lost control, inadvertently attacking and killing Evelyn and Kylie before running away. The guilt of this act led Malia to stay sheltered away in the Preserve, still in her coyote form, for the next eight years until being discovered by the True Alpha Werewolf Scott McCall and his human best friend Stiles Stilinski. The two realized who and what Malia was and worked with the rest of their pack to turn her back into her human form.

Afterward, Malia was briefly sent to Eichen House to help adjust to her return to the human world, where she met officially Stiles following his admittance to the facility. Once Malia was released from Eichen House, she sought out Scott and Stiles and joined their pack, fighting alongside them through the various supernatural and human threats against them. During this time, she learned the truth about her parentage and the identity of both her biological mother and father. When it became clear that her biological mother, the Desert Wolf, was behind the attack that killed Evelyn and Kylie, and now after Malia and her power, Malia became determined to find and kill the Desert Wolf. However, after reconciling with Scott McCall and the McCall Pack, Malia instead decided to simply steal her mother's powers with Belasko's talons before having her imprisoned in Eichen House for her crimes.

In Season 6, Malia struggled with her control over her Werecoyote side as a result of the Wild Hunt and her anchor Stiles's temporary erasure. In this time, she relearned how to take her full coyote form. Throughout the season, Malia took on a more active role in the pack while preparing for graduation, ultimately passing summer school so she could graduate along with her friends. Her former relationship with her Alpha Scott McCall also developed into a true romance that endured even in the flashforward to two years in the future in the series finale. They later broke up, before the events of the movie. She is currently in a romantic relationship with Hellhound, Deputy Jordan Parrish.

Malia is a member of the Tate Family, the McCall Pack, and the Hale Family.

Early life[]

Malia was born in the fall of the mid-1990s to the Werecoyote assassin known as the Desert Wolf and a Werewolf, Peter Hale. However, the circumstances of her birth remain a mystery. What is known is that she was adopted by Henry and Evelyn Tate and that Peter's memories of Malia's birth were taken from him by his sister Talia with the Werewolf memory sharing ritual. ("Letharia Vulpina"), ("Weaponized") Malia was raised at the Tate Family's ranch, and her adoptive parents had a biological daughter, Kylie, some time later.

When Malia was around nine years old, she got into a fight with her mother and sister one full moon right before they were getting ready to leave the house on an errand. To this day, Malia cannot remember what the fight was about—all she can recall is that, in her anger, she told them, "I wish you were all dead." While Evelyn was driving their car through the back roads of Beacon Hills, the Desert Wolf appeared in the middle of the road and began to shoot at them, which frightened her so much that she reflexively jerked the wheel away and drove into the nearby nature preserve.

The known details of what follows are still vague as well, but it can be assumed that the stress of the shooting and the detour, in conjunction with the full moon, caused Malia to transform into a full coyote the first time out of stress, which either caused the wreck in the woods or was the result of it. It can also be assumed, due to Malia's blue eyes, that she was so overcome by the effects of her first full moon that she killed her mother and sister before running deeper into the woods, where she would live as a coyote for the next eight years out of guilt for her actions. It took three days before anyone even found the scene of the car crash.

Throughout Teen Wolf[]

In Anchors, when helping Sheriff Stilinski solve a cold case in which a mother, Evelyn Tate, and her two daughters, Malia and Kylie, were involved in a car accident on a Full Moon, Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski soon discovered that one of the daughters, Malia, is actually a Werecoyote who had been living in her full-coyote form in the Beacon Hills Preserve for the last eight years since the accident.

This occurred when Scott and Stiles set out for the woods in hopes of finding Malia's body, believing that by doing so, they would be helping Sheriff Stilinski close one last cold case before he was potentially impeached. However, when the two got separated, Scott ended up coming upon a coyote whose eyes glowed bright blue when Scott flashed his own red Alpha eyes at her, revealing that she had been trapped in her full-coyote form in the woods since the accident. Meanwhile, Stiles, who was left at the crash site, took the baby doll that was left there in case Scott needed it as a scent source in the future and put it in his backpack.

In More Bad Than Good, after Scott lost track of Malia, he caught back up with Stiles, who had found her coyote den, and confirmed the coyote's identity when they found the baby blanket and coat Malia was wearing as a child in her bed. Realizing that this was technically a crime scene, they had no choice but to call Sheriff Stilinski in to check it out, which inadvertently led Special Agent McCall and Malia's adoptive father Henry Tate out as well. Unbeknownst to them all, Malia was furious that her home was invaded and roared at the moon overhead at Lookout Point.

The next day, coyote-Malia tracked the scent of the baby doll Stiles stole from the crash site, which was still in his book bag, all the way to the high school. However, Stiles had left the bag behind in his history classroom after he had a panic attack during class (as a result of the surrogate sacrifice ritual from Alpha Pact/Lunar Ellipse and his possession by the Nogitsune) and rushed to the restroom. New student Kira Yukimura, who was already drawn to Scott, picked up his and Scott's backpacks from the classroom and carried them into the hall, intending to return them in an attempt to make friends.

Unfortunately for Kira, coyote-Malia had arrived just as she had made it to the hallway, scaring the young woman so much that she instinctively ran for cover in the boy's locker room, where she hid behind a row of lockers. Malia leaped up and busted through the window in the door to the locker room and growled as she pursued Kira, though luckily, Scott had heard the commotion and scared Malia away by knocking the row of lockers over.

Afterward, Stiles and his father Sheriff Stilinski discussed the issue of Malia and how they could best help her in the hallway. Stilinski was relieved to learn that someone saw coyote-Malia run across the field and back into the woods before anyone got hurt, but when Stiles asked what would happen if someone did get hurt, Stilinski grimly admitted that they would probably have to put "it" down. Stiles, appalled, reminded Stilinski that "it" was actually a girl who they would be killing, but Stilinski was still having difficulty accepting that Werecoyotes were real. When Stilinski asked Stiles a final time if he was sure that this was a young woman they were dealing with and not an animal, Stiles maintained his story and insisted he knew it to be true because Scott believed it.

It wasn't until later that Scott and Stiles figured out that Malia had been targeting them due to their theft of the baby doll, which they could tell was important to her, though they didn't understand why. Just as Stiles had pulled the doll out of his bag, which had been ripped in the fight, Henry Tate arrived, having heard about what happened on the police scanner, and immediately snatched the doll out of his hands. This seemed to confirm in Henry's mind that the coyote in question was the one that killed his daughters and wife eight years ago, and he insisted that they kill it before he was escorted outside by security.

After school, Scott, Stiles, and Isaac Lahey met with Alan Deaton at the Beacon Hills Animal Clinic to formulate a plan. Deaton gave them three vials of xylazine, a tranquilizer used for larger animals such as horses, which he said would knock a coyote out in seconds. They then planned on Allison's perfect marksmanship to ensure that they could hit coyote-Malia, though Isaac was skeptical due to Allison's own side effects from the surrogate sacrifice ritual and the fact that they were having such a hard time finding coyote-Malia in the first place.

Scott suddenly realized that he could use his Alpha Roar to force Malia back into human form, as Peter Hale had used it on him to force him to shift into Werewolf form, and Deucalion used it on him in a similar manner to do the same. However, Deaton was unsure of how realistic this plan was, since they weren't able to get a hold of Derek Hale and didn't know of anyone else who could teach him. Scott admitted that he could try it on his own, but he was afraid to do so since the after-effects of the ritual were making him lose control over his transformations.

This eventually led Stiles to get the idea to seek out Ethan and Aiden, who still knew how to use the Alpha Roar despite no longer being Alphas. Though the twins didn't exactly use a great method to teach Scott this skill (as their lesson involved violently assaulting Scott in an attempt to bait him into fighting back), Scott still set off to enact the plan despite not having successfully roared yet.

The next day, the McCall Pack put their plan into motion, with Allison borrowing her father Chris Argent's tranquilizer gun and Isaac helping her fill up the darts with the xylazine. When Allison asked if Isaac was sure he could hone in on Malia, pointing out that they could be in the woods for a long time if not, Isaac assured her that he had a good lock on her scent, which he wryly admitted smelled strongly of pee.

Once they all met up at the Beacon Hills Preserve, Lydia wondered if they were possibly doing more harm than good, but Scott insisted that they were doing the right thing by preventing a father from inadvertently killing his daughter. Meanwhile, Stilinski was horrified to learn that Henry had put coyote traps all over the woods in an attempt to catch coyote-Malia, and that an innocent jogger had nearly stepped right into it. This led him to force Henry into the woods with him to disarm all the traps to ensure that no one else got hurt, though before they could do so, they found that coyote-Malia had broken through the screen door and gotten into the house, where she grabbed the baby doll Henry had taken from Stiles and run off with it. Stilinski then called Stiles to inform him of what happened and to warn him to stay out of the woods as well, though he and the rest of the pack ignored this instruction.

When Scott heard coyote-Malia howl in the woods, he took off after her, with Allison and Isaac chasing after him as well. This left Stiles and Lydia to try to figure out why the doll was so important to coyote-Malia and what it had to do with her recent attacks. After realizing that Malia's sister Kylie was holding the baby in the photo they found in the Tate Ranch in the previous episode, Stiles figured out that Malia put the baby doll at the crash site just as a person would lay flowers on a grave, and she only got mad because they essentially stole the "flowers" in this case.

Elsewhere, Allison was struggling to keep up with Isaac, who had lost sight of Scott, and was horrified when Isaac accidentally stepped on one of Henry's traps and got his right ankle painfully clamped within it. Isaac yelled in pain before using his strength to hold the trap open wide enough to release the pressure on his ankle, just as he caught sight of Henry aiming his rifle at coyote-Malia. Isaac instructed Allison to shoot Henry with the tranquilizer gun, and though she missed the first shot, she managed to hit him and knock him out with the second before he could harm his daughter. Unfortunately, when Allison went to aim the last shot at coyote-Malia, she was shocked to find that she had run away in the chaos.

Fortunately for them all, Scott had finally caught up with Malia, leaping over a ravine and cornering her at the crash site, where he was finally able to get the confidence and control to shift into his Werewolf form and Alpha Roar for the first time. Just as he intended, the roar forced Malia back into her human form for the first time in almost a decade, leaving a very naked teenage Malia laying in the fetal position in the leaves. They quickly got her some clothes before Stilinski brought Malia to the Tate Ranch so that she could finally reunite with her father, with both of them bursting into tears after being separated for so long.

In Galvanize, Malia was referenced by Scott McCall, Kira Yukimura, and Ken Yukimura at various points. Kira first mentioned her in a conversation with her father Ken, where she lamented the fact that the only person who had shown any interest in her since she moved to Beacon Hills was a "wild coyote." She was then mentioned again by Ken when he invited Scott to the Yukimura House for a "Thanks For Saving My Daughter From Becoming a Coyote Dinner" dinner.

In Letharia Vulpina, Peter Hale managed to make a deal with Lydia Martin and Allison Argent in which Peter would teach Lydia how to control her Banshee powers and in exchange, Lydia would use her powers to use Talia's claws to unlock a memory Talia Hale had stolen from him before her death. After some struggle, Lydia eventually figured out the memory Peter was curious about—Malia was his biological daughter, which Talia had, for some reason, made him forget on purpose. This revealed that Malia had been adopted by the Tate Family rather than being Henry Tate's biological daughter.

Back at the lab, she's wearing goggles for protection but she takes them off and attempts to encourage Kira but it doesn't work. This leads to Kira breaking the power grid. At Eichen, she and Kira are with a group of guests, once they enter, Malia and Kira hide behind a corner. Malia's "guy" enters completely naked as a distraction, this allows them to enter the electrical room without being seen. However, she's concerned with the plan not working, if it goes bad will they have to fight The Beast, this could be a problem especially since Scott hasn't healed but he assures her that he has. After ripping out the wires on one of the vans, she jumps across to another but the desert wolf grabs her leg and pulls her to the ground. She would like nothing more than to kill her mother at the moment but she has more important things to do; however, she won't leave Malia alone, so she ejects her claws in a hostile manner but the desert wolf is not there for a fight.

She hears the gunfire from upstairs and begins to walk towards the steps, the floor creaks, her mother hears this and encourages Malia to come down while Braeden tells her to stay up. Corinne accuses her of stealing the power but Malia insists that she didn't do anything. She slowly makes her way down the steps, by the time she makes it to the bottom, she's on one side of the wall and Corinne is on the other.

As she prepares to attack, Stiles walks in, Malia grabs Stiles and pushes him out the way and she and her mother begin to fight. After noticing that Stiles is hurt, she reaches for the gun on the floor but Corinne gets to it fist and she shoots Malia numerous times. As she is shot for the final time, Stiles tosses her Belasko's talons, Malia puts them on and steals the rest of her mother's power, his eyes begin to glow the brightest they've ever been. Personality[]

Due to Malia spending half of her life living as a coyote she is capable of taking care of herself. Though she has worked very hard to relearn how to live as a human after so many years of living as a coyote, Malia is more in touch with her animal instincts than anyone else in the McCall Pack, even the born Werewolves like Derek Hale.

Maybe we need to try something different. Maybe we need to think like Stiles.
Malia and Derek Hale in Orphaned

However, despite her struggles to catch up with her peers in school in academic subjects such as math and history, Malia is quite intelligent, and has shown a strong aptitude for investigating supernatural disasters, such as when she and Derek found Satomi's Pack at Look-Out Point, or when she assisted Stiles Stilinski in shutting down the Deadpool computers. Malia is also a survivor at heart, a trait she picked up in the wild kingdom, though her experiences with her pack have allowed her to shut down her reflexive instincts to flee from danger in favor of fighting and protecting her loved ones. She has also grown a great deal with regards to her personal relationships, whether romantic or platonic, and has quickly developed lasting connections with the members of her pack.

Malia: "Wolves, or Werewolves?"
Lydia: "They said "wolves.""
Malia: "Not interested. You go."
Lydia: "Liam was asking for help from the Werecoyote, not the Banshee."
Malia: "Why me?"
Lydia: "Because you're the former animal! No one understands mysterious animal situations like you do."

Malia has demonstrated that she hates being lied to, and finding out that someone she cares about has lied to her is one of the worst sins a person can commit in her eyes, as evidenced by her reaction upon learning that Stiles and Scott McCall kept the identity of her biological father (and the fact that she was adopted) a secret. She also continues to carry a lot of guilt for the deaths of her adoptive mother and sister and struggles a lot with her animal instincts to fight and kill.

This has also recently led her to feel a great deal of anger and hatred for the Desert Wolf, now that she knows the truth about what really caused the events that led to the death of her family members, to the point where she has vowed to kill her biological mother before she can kill her first. This has added even more guilt and shame to Malia's conscience, as her desire to get vengeance on the Desert Wolf conflicts with her internal belief in her pack's policy against taking life unless necessary. When Malia feels as though she's going to disappoint the people she cares about, she tends to pull away from them and isolate herself as punishment for the sins she believes she's committing. Despite this, she still cares deeply about her family and pack and will do anything to help protect them, regardless of her own feelings.

However, by the final season, Malia has grown into a confident, self-assured, and content young woman who trusts herself, her instincts, and her pack unconditionally. Her affiliation with Scott McCall and the McCall Pack led her to always choose to do the right thing, no matter what, even if she is still occasionally tempted to respond with violence rather than communication. She also became much better at reading people, correctly assuming that Scott was planning on potentially martyring himself to save the rest of the supernatural community from Monroe's Army, and she understood that Halwyn was so intent on protecting the world from the Anuk-ite that he would die if it meant defeating it.

With Stiles interning with the FBI, Malia became Scott's right-hand person, while Liam was his left-hand person, ensuring that he had fellow shapeshifters at his side whenever needed to back him up. She also became secure in her relationships, developing close friendships with Stiles, Liam, Lydia, Kira, and Derek, while her bond with Scott grew from a friendly Alpha-Beta bond to that of equal romantic partners.

Physical Appearance[]

Malia is a very beautiful and attractive, tall, athletic, lean young woman. Her hair is naturally dark brown, but after returning to her human form in 2011, Malia briefly had long, blonde-highlighted hair before cutting it into a short bob and dyeing it her natural color again. Malia's style is rustic and casual, typically choosing to wear cut-off jean shorts or neutral-toned skinny jeans with flannel shirts and trendy hoodies paired with boots. She doesn't often wear much jewelry or makeup, though she may accessorize with tall woolen socks under her boots or knit caps.

Powers and Abilities[]

Werecoyote Physiology: Malia has demonstrated several abilities associated with the Werecoyote. She has super strength, speed, agility/reflexes, durability, senses, healing, pain absorption and partial Shapeshifting. Malia has also joined Scott's pack; on one confirmed instance her Werecoyote eyes will glow whenever Scott howls, suggesting that she does have a supernatural connection to him as his packmate and that she is a Beta in his pack despite being a Werecoyote who was not bitten by him. She is also more in tune with her coyote side after living in the wild for almost a decade, so she can use her abilities much more efficiently than her were-creature peers, though she had to be taught to consciously use some of her powers. Even though Malia possess all the abilities of a Werecoyote, she also possesses abilities that seem to be more exclusive to her, which include:

3x14 Werecoyote

Malia's Full Coyote Form

Powers[]

  • Advanced Shapeshifting: Malia possesses the ability to fully transform into a true coyote. Malia demonstrated this ability for the first time when she was eight years old and spent the next eight years living as a true coyote in the woods. However, since being returned to her human form in 2011, Malia is still learning how to use the full extent of her Werecoyote abilities, but she has recently relearned how to fully shift into a coyote after being unable to consciously/actively do so, likely as a result of stealing the powers of her mother, the Desert Wolf.
  • Super Strength: Supernatural strength is common for all Werecoyotes. However, due to stealing her mother's powers, Malia is far stronger than the average Werecoyote or Beta. Because of this, she likely is one of the strongest in the Pack, second to Scott, a True Alpha.
  • Super Senses: Malia has shown to be an extremely skilled tracker as evidenced by the fact that she has been able to easily track people within the underground tunnels beneath Beacon Hills, whereas most supernaturals find it difficult or even impossible because of the conflicting scents of sewage and chemicals.

Abilities[]

  • Animal Knowledge: Due to Malia having spent half her life in the woods in her coyote form, Malia has very advanced knowledge of the animal kingdom and how predatory animals live and behave. Even though Malia has since learned a great deal about living as a human after spending so long as an animal, her first instinct is to behave like a coyote, which has helped the pack in numerous encounters with animals and rabid supernaturals.
  • Expert Combatant: Malia's generally brave nature and willingness to fight in conjunction with her supernatural physical abilities have made her one of the best fighters in the McCall Pack, She was able to win in a battle with the Kanima/Werewolf Tracy Stewart, even though she had just recently recovered from being paralyzed by Tracy's venom, and held her own against the half-Berserker Chimera Noah Patrick. Over time, her fighting skills continued to advance, as seen when she was able to take out four Ghost Riders at once, something that other supernatural beings such as Corey Bryant, Theo Raeken, Liam Dunbar, and even her own father Peter Hale found difficult.
  • Pain Tolerance: Malia has shown to have a high tolerance for pain, and can handle it much better than her supernatural peers. This has led her to volunteer to get hurt if it means she can gain information or an advantage for the pack, and she always refuses any pain control measures when she's injured. The latter was evidenced in Relics, when refused any pain medication and grabbed the forceps out of Melissa McCall's hands before she pulled the bullet out of her own leg, frustrated by the fact that Melissa's attempts to be gentle was causing long-term moderate pain rather than the momentary severe pain caused by her own efforts.
  • Hale Lineage: As a member of the Hale bloodline, Malia can use her claws to open the doors to the Hale Vault underneath Beacon Hills High School.

Weaknesses[]

As a Werecoyote, Malia possesses all the standard weaknesses associated with the species. This includes electricity (which can weaken or even kill her depending on the voltage), Wolfsbane (which can weaken or kill her depending on the potency, strain, and method of exposure), letharia vulpina or "wolf lichen," and the modified canine distemper virus. She is also somewhat vulnerable to the effects of heightened emotions and full moons like most werecreatures, though she has learned enough control to be able to resist transforming except for certain rare occasions. She is also vulnerable to the lunar eclipse during the period when the moon is in the Earth's umbral shadow, as Werecoyotes, like all werecreatures, lose their powers, including their super strength, healing, and shapeshifting abilities.

Etymology[]

  • Malia: The name Malia is best known as a feminine Hawaiian given name that is a form of the name Mary, Maria, or Marie, and it has countless variations based on spelling or the region in which it is used. Maria is the Latin form of the Greek Μαρια, which is derived from the Hebrew מִרְיָם. Other related names are Miryam (the name of the sister of Moses in the Old Testament), Mora, Mara, Marianne, Marilyn, and Maureen, among numerous others. The meaning of "Malia" in Hawaiian is not known for certain, but theories include "sea of bitterness," "rebelliousness," and "a wish for a child," with the latter two definitions being relevant to Malia Tate since she was named by her adoptive parents who wanted a child and who has a very rebellious personality. Additionally, the name Malia means "queen" in Swahili, and in other languages and cultures, it is thought to mean "beloved" or "calm, peaceful."
  • Hale: Derived from a geographical locality, "at the hale," i.e. "hall" (either as a proprietor or servant at a residence there). It is also derived from the Old English healh, meaning "nook" or "hollow." In northern England, the name often has a specialized meaning, either denoting a piece of flat alluvial land by the side of a river or as a patch of dry land in a fen. It is also sometimes a habitational name from any of the several places in England that shares the same name. Additionally, it could also have origins as a Middle English personal name derived from either of two Old English bynames, Haele ("hero"), or Haegel, which is akin to the Germanic Hagano meaning "hawthorn." The name Hale was first recorded as De Halys in 1130. It is said that the Hales were related to Saint Edmund, the King of East Anglia, which is how the family's coat of arms got their arrows pointing downward. Tate: Tate, also recorded as Tait, is an Anglo-Scottish surname that is believed to be of Norse Viking origin, likely being derived from the pre-7th century Old Norse word teitr, meaning "glad or cheerful." The word also appears in the Icelandic saga Landnamabok, which details the founding and settlement of Iceland. The earliest known record of the name dates back to 1279 in the Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire, England. Ironically, one of the more interesting name bearers is Sir Henry Tate (1819-1899), who shares the name of Malia's adoptive father, and who owned the famous sugar firm, Tate & Lyle.
