ā€œ For years, the Nemeton's power was virtually gone, like the dying ember of a burned out fire. But a few months earlier, something happened that caused that ember to glow a little brighter. Something that gave it a spark of power again-- the sacrifice of a virgin. You didn't know what you were doing back then, but killing Paige in the root cellar, sacrificing her there, gave power to the Nemeton. You gave it power again. You gave me power. Just enough to hold onto life a little longer. Long enough to be found. ā€
ā€” Jennifer Blake to Derek Hale about their shared history

The Overlooked is the tenth episode of Season 3 and the thirty-fourth episode of the series.

Synopsis

Trapped in the hospital, Scott and the gang have to work with the Darach against the Alpha Pack.

Plot

After Jennifer takes Stiles' dad, Derek and Scott capture her and bring her to the hospital in order to save Cora's life, where they are trapped by the Alphas. It is then revealed that Jennifer is in fact Kali's former Emissary and that the Alphas want her dead before she can attempt to kill them. With the help of Peter, Allison, Chris, Stiles, and Isaac, they manage to fight against the Alphas and escape, but Jennifer kidnaps Scott's mom, since she is a guardian like the Sheriff. Feeling that there is no other way, Scott joins Deucalion to find Jennifer, who promises to help find his mother and Stiles's father in return for his assistance.

Continuity

  • Jennifer Blake's backstory is revealed in this episode, ten episodes after her first appearance in Tattoo, when she confesses that her name used to be named Julia Baccari. She was also Kali's Emissary who was mauled and left for dead when Kali killed her pack to join the Alpha Pack. Jennifer first alluded to her past trauma in Unleashed.
  • Stiles realizes that the last set of three sacrifices is "Guardians," as in parents.
  • Scott, Stiles, and Derek see Jennifer's true face for the first time when Scott throws crushed mistletoe on her, temporarily disrupting her magical glamouring power. Her scarred true face was first seen in Motel California, but only by Lydia Martin and the audience.
  • Peter and Melissa have their first reunion since Season 1's Co-Captain in this episode.
  • Derek's first love, Paige Krasikeva, is mentioned in this episode. She was last seen in the flashbacks in Visionary.
  • Kate Argent was mentioned by Stiles in this episode. She was last seen in Code Breaker.
  • Derek, Peter, and Stiles learn that Scott is a True Alpha in this episode. This was first revealed by Alan Deaton in Currents.
  • Though Lydia Martin doesn't appear in this episode, she is referenced by Allison and Isaac after Isaac asks her how Lydia is doing, and Allison responds that she had to be taken to a hospital downtown because of the bruises on her neck due to Beacon Memorial being evacuated due to the thunderstorm. Lydia was injured after Jennifer nearly strangled her to death in The Girl Who Knew Too Much.
  • Jennifer's eyes turn pure white when she uses her super-strength to shove Kali down the hall away from the elevator she's hiding in, which is the first and last time her eyes are shown to do this.
  • Stiles references Derek's relationship with Kate Argent in this episode. Kate was last seen in Season 1's Code Breaker.
  • It is revealed that epinephrine can temporarily increase the strength of Werewolves due to the fact that it increases the heart rate. This would later be used again by Alan Deaton in Lunar Ellipse to trigger Ethan and Aiden's healing abilities.
  • Stiles references Cora Hale's comment that all the McCall Pack can do is find the bodies, which she made in The Girl Who Knew Too Much.
  • It was implied by Deucalion that Kali may have had a romantic history with Ennis, which was hinted at in Frayed after he died.
    • Kali also stated that she loved Jennifer, which many fans have taken to mean that she may have had a romantic history with her as well.
  • Jennifer references Vernon Boyd's question in Currents about what happens to Werewolves on a lunar eclipse, and it is revealed that they lose their power, which will be confirmed on screen in Lunar Ellipse.

Trivia
